The short answer
If you are applying to universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, the USA, Europe or Malaysia, IELTS Academic is accepted almost everywhere and is the safest default. You need IELTS for UKVI only when a UK visa route specifically requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) taken at an approved centre. PTE Academic is a strong alternative if you prefer a fully computer-based test with fast results, but always check that your specific university and visa route accept it before you book.
The rest of this guide explains the differences so you can make the decision with confidence rather than relying on advice from friends whose situation may be different from yours.
What is IELTS Academic?
IELTS Academic tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and is designed for university study. In Bangladesh it is delivered by the British Council and IDP in major cities including Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet and others, on paper or on computer. The Speaking test is always a face-to-face conversation with a human examiner, which many students find more natural than talking to a microphone.
Results are reported in bands from 0 to 9. Computer-delivered results usually arrive within a few days, while paper-based results take longer, typically around two weeks. Always confirm current timings with the test centre when you book.
What is IELTS for UKVI?
IELTS for UKVI is not a different exam in terms of content. The Academic and General Training versions have the same questions, timing and scoring as the standard tests. The difference is administrative: the test is taken at a centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration, under extra security procedures, and the result is recognised as a SELT for UK visa purposes.
Many UK universities accept standard IELTS Academic for a Student visa when they assess your English themselves, especially for degree-level courses. Some routes, such as certain pre-sessional or below-degree courses and several work or family visas, require a SELT. Your university's admissions or international office should tell you which one you need. Do not pay the higher UKVI fee unless your route genuinely requires it.
There is also IELTS Life Skills, a separate speaking and listening test at A1, A2 or B1 level used for some UK family and settlement visas. It is not suitable for university admission.
What is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic, run by Pearson, is taken entirely on computer, including Speaking, which you record into a microphone. It is scored automatically on a scale from 10 to 90, and results commonly arrive within about two days. Its question types are different from IELTS; for example, some tasks combine skills, such as listening to a lecture and then speaking or writing about it.
PTE Academic is widely accepted by universities in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and by many institutions elsewhere. A UKVI-approved version is available for UK visa purposes. For Canada, many institutions accept PTE Academic for study, while immigration programmes have their own list of approved tests. Acceptance changes over time, so check official government and university websites before relying on it.

Which test suits you?
Choose IELTS if you like talking to a real person, write better by hand or prefer a test format that thousands of free resources, including IELTSora, are built around. It is also the most familiar test for admissions officers worldwide.
Choose PTE if you type quickly, are comfortable speaking into a microphone in a room where other candidates are also speaking, and need results very quickly for a deadline. Some students find PTE's automatic scoring more predictable once they understand the task types.
Choose IELTS for UKVI only when your UK visa route or course provider explicitly asks for a SELT.
A practical checklist before you book
Booking the wrong test is an expensive mistake, and it is surprisingly common. Ten minutes of checking official sources can save you a fee and several weeks.
- Check the English requirement on each university's course page, including minimum scores per skill.
- Check the visa route on the official government website, not only agent advice.
- Confirm whether the institution accepts computer-delivered IELTS, PTE or both.
- Look at your deadline and choose a test date that leaves time for one retake if needed.
- Take a full practice test in the format you choose before paying the fee.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS UKVI harder than normal IELTS? No. The content, difficulty and scoring are the same. Only the test centre procedures and the visa recognition differ.
Is PTE easier than IELTS? Neither is easier for everyone. Some students score higher in PTE because of its format, while others do better with a human Speaking examiner.
How long is an IELTS score valid? Most universities and visa authorities accept scores for two years from the test date.
Can I prepare for IELTS UKVI with normal IELTS practice? Yes. Because the content is identical, all standard IELTS practice tests and mock tests apply.
