The Listening test: four parts in 30 minutes

What each part sounds like, how the answer sheet works, and how to use the reading time before each recording.

15 minutesFoundationLesson 1 of 7
বাংলায় সারাংশ (Bangla summary)

চারটি অংশ কেমন, উত্তরপত্র কীভাবে কাজ করে এবং প্রতিটি রেকর্ডিংয়ের আগে পড়ার সময় কীভাবে কাজে লাগাবেন।

By the end of this lesson you can

  • Describe the four parts and how difficulty rises
  • Use the preparation time before each part
  • Manage transfer time on paper and computer tests

Four parts, forty questions

Part 1 is a conversation in an everyday situation, such as booking a course. Part 2 is one speaker giving information, such as a guide describing a site. Part 3 is a discussion in an education context, often students and a tutor. Part 4 is a lecture with no breaks.

Each part has ten questions, and the recording is heard once. The parts get harder: Part 4 is fast, academic and continuous.

Reading time and transfer time

Before each part you get a short pause to read the questions. Use it to underline key words and predict the type of answer, such as a number, a name or a place.

On the paper test you get 10 minutes at the end to copy answers to the answer sheet. On the computer test you type answers as you listen and get only 2 minutes to check at the end.
