Listening for paraphrases

The question rarely uses the speaker's exact words. Learn to match meaning when the words change.

15 minutesIntermediateLesson 4 of 7
বাংলায় সারাংশ (Bangla summary)

প্রশ্নের শব্দ আর বক্তার শব্দ সাধারণত এক নয়। শব্দ বদলালেও অর্থ মেলাতে শিখুন।

By the end of this lesson you can

  • Recognise synonyms and rephrased ideas
  • Predict likely paraphrases of key words
  • Match meaning instead of single words

Same meaning, different words

Questions paraphrase the recording. "The most popular activity" may be heard as "the thing most people sign up for". "Free of charge" may be "you don't have to pay".

Paraphrases come in a few forms: synonyms (cheap → inexpensive), word form changes (decide → decision), opposites with a negative (expensive → not cheap) and whole rephrased ideas.

Question versus recording

Question: Why did the speaker leave the job? → Recording: "I'd just had enough of the commute."

Question: What do visitors need to do first? → Recording: "Before anything else, pick up a map."

Question: The course is suitable for ___ → Recording: "It's aimed at complete beginners."
