- Apply word limits correctly, including hyphenated words and numbers
- Predict the type of word that fits each gap
- Check spelling, plurals and grammar before moving on
Reading the instruction
'NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS' means one or two words. Three words is wrong even if they contain the right answer.
'AND/OR A NUMBER' means you may also write one number, such as 15 or 2,000. A hyphenated word such as well-known counts as one word.
'ONE WORD ONLY' means exactly one word. Articles such as a or the count as words, so leave them out unless they are needed.
Predict before you listen or read
Look at the words around each gap and decide what kind of word is missing: a noun, a number, an adjective, a date? Is a noun singular or plural?
In Listening, the answer usually comes in the same order as the questions, and speakers often correct themselves — 'Tuesday… no, sorry, Wednesday'. Write the final answer.
Worked example
Form: Delivery day: ______ (NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS)
Recording: 'We usually deliver on Mondays, but this week it'll be Thursday morning.'
Answer: Thursday morning (two words). 'Monday' is a distractor; 'on Thursday morning' is three words and would be marked wrong.
