By the end of this lesson you can
- Find the starting point and orientation before listening
- Understand location and direction phrases
- Label a plan in the order the speaker describes it
Start by finding yourself
Map questions usually appear in Part 2. Before the recording, find the "You are here" point, the entrance or the compass, and look at the labelled places. The answers come in question order, so follow the numbers.
The language of location
Learn these phrases as groups: opposite, next to, beside, between X and Y, in the corner, at the far end, on your left/right as you enter, just past, beyond, at the junction, north of, adjacent to.
Speakers guide you as if you are walking: "Go through the main doors, turn left, and the café is the second room on your right."
Following a route
"As you come in through the main gate, the gift shop is immediately on your right. Walk past it and you'll reach the pond. The picnic area is on the far side of the pond, opposite the toilets."
Sequence: gate → gift shop (right) → pond → picnic area (beyond the pond, facing the toilets)
