General Training Task 1: letters

Formal, semi-formal or informal: choose the right tone, cover all three bullet points and open and close correctly.

20 minutesIntermediateLesson 2 of 9
বাংলায় সারাংশ (Bangla summary)

Formal, semi-formal না informal — সঠিক ভঙ্গি বেছে নিন, তিনটি bullet point-ই লিখুন এবং সঠিকভাবে শুরু ও শেষ করুন।

By the end of this lesson you can

  • Decide the tone from who you are writing to
  • Cover all three bullet points in separate paragraphs
  • Use suitable openings and closings

Who are you writing to?

Formal: someone you don't know, such as a manager or a company. Start "Dear Sir or Madam," and end "Yours faithfully,", or use their name ("Dear Mr Khan,") and end "Yours sincerely,".

Semi-formal: someone you know but not closely, such as a landlord or a colleague. Use their title and surname, and end "Kind regards,". Informal: a friend or relative. Start "Dear Rina," or "Hi Rina," and end "Best wishes," or "Love,".

Cover every bullet point

The task gives three bullet points. Your letter must address all three, ideally one paragraph each. Missing one limits your Task Achievement score.

Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. Open with one sentence that states why you are writing.

Openings by tone

Formal: I am writing to complain about the delivery service I received on 3 March.

Semi-formal: I'm writing to let you know about a problem with the heating in my flat.

Informal: It was great to hear from you! I'm so sorry I haven't replied sooner.
