By the end of this lesson you can
- Identify the five common Task 2 question types
- Plan four paragraphs that answer every part of the question
- Write a clear introduction and conclusion
Five common question types
Opinion: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" Discussion: "Discuss both views and give your own opinion." Problem–solution: "What are the causes/problems and what can be done?" Advantages–disadvantages: "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" Two-part: two direct questions such as "Why is this happening? Is it a positive development?"
Each type asks for something specific. A discussion essay that gives only one view, or omits your opinion, does not fully answer the question.
A reliable four-paragraph plan
Introduction (2–3 sentences): paraphrase the topic and state your position or what the essay will do. Body 1 and Body 2: one main idea each, explained and supported with an example. Conclusion (2 sentences): restate your answer clearly.
Aim for 260–300 words in 40 minutes, with five minutes for planning and five for checking.
Plan for a discussion essay
Question: Some people think university should be free; others think students should pay. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Intro: views differ; I believe the cost should be shared.
Body 1: why free education helps society (more skilled workers; fairer access).
Body 2: why students might pay (personal benefit; limited public money).
Conclusion: shared cost through low fees and support for poorer students.
