Why the overview matters most in Academic Task 1, and a reliable four-paragraph structure.

What examiners look for
Task Achievement rewards an answer that presents a clear overview of the main trends, differences or stages, and supports it with relevant data. Without an overview, it is very hard to score above band 5 for this criterion.
Task 1 is a report, not an essay: describe what the visual shows. Do not explain why changes happened or give your opinion.
A four-paragraph structure
1. Introduction: one sentence paraphrasing what the visual shows (what, where, when).
2. Overview: two sentences on the most important features — the biggest, the smallest, the general direction of change. No detailed numbers.
3. Detail paragraph 1: one group of features with supporting figures.
4. Detail paragraph 2: the other group, with comparisons.
Sample overview
Overall, the youngest and oldest age groups visited libraries most often in both years, and visits by people aged 55 and over rose noticeably, while use among 18 to 34-year-olds fell.
It names the main pattern and the main changes without a single precise figure. The details go in the next paragraphs.
