A, an or the? Article rules that fix most IELTS errors

Articles are the most common grammar mistake in IELTS Writing. Four rules that cover most cases, with before-and-after examples.

By IELTSora teaching team · Updated · 2 min read

Rule 1: singular countable nouns need an article

"Student needs a laptop" is wrong. Use a/an for one of many, the for a specific one, or make it plural: "A student needs a laptop", "Students need laptops".

Rule 2: general plural and uncountable nouns take no article

When you mean things in general, use no article: "Education is important", "Cars cause pollution". "The education is important" sounds as if you mean one particular education.

Rule 3: use "the" when both of you know which one

Use the for something already mentioned, something unique, or something made specific: "the government", "the internet", "the city where I grew up", "the number of students".

Rule 4: fixed phrases

Some phrases are fixed, so learn them as a whole:

  • go to school / university / work / bed (no article)
  • in the morning / at night
  • the elderly, the young, the unemployed
  • most people (not "the most people")
  • on the other hand

Correcting a paragraph

✓ In modern society, the internet has changed the way people work. Most people now use a computer every day.

A quick checking method

When you check your writing, find every singular countable noun and ask: does it have a, an, the, my, this or another determiner in front of it? If not, add one or make the noun plural. This single check fixes most article errors in a few minutes, and it is the fastest grammar improvement most learners can make before the test.
