I'd like to describe Ramna Park, which is right in the middle of Dhaka, close to the university area and some government buildings.
It's one of the oldest parks in the city and it's surprisingly big, with a large lake in the centre, wide walking paths and huge old trees, some of which are more than a hundred years old. In spring, the krishnachura trees turn bright red, and the whole park looks like it's on fire, in a beautiful way.
The park has a different personality depending on the time of day. Early in the morning it's full of people exercising: older men walking in groups, women doing yoga and a few serious runners. Around midday it's quieter, mostly office workers eating lunch on the benches. In the evening, families bring their children, and you see couples sitting by the lake. During Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, it becomes incredibly crowded with music and cultural performances.
I enjoy going there because it's one of the few places in the city where you can actually breathe. I usually go for a long walk on Friday mornings, and it clears my head before the weekend. I also love people-watching there; you see every type of person in the city in one place. For me, it shows how valuable green space is in a crowded city, and I think we need many more parks like it.
