One building I find really interesting is the National Parliament House in Dhaka, which locals call Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. It's in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area, and it was designed by the American architect Louis Kahn.
The first time I saw it up close I was about fifteen, on a school trip, and honestly it didn't look like any government building I'd seen before. It's made almost entirely of raw concrete with thin lines of white marble, and the walls have huge geometric openings, circles, triangles and rectangles, instead of normal windows. The whole complex sits on a large artificial lake, so on a calm day the building is reflected perfectly in the water, which makes it look like it's floating.
It's used, of course, as the home of the parliament, so the members of parliament meet there to debate and pass laws. Ordinary visitors can't go into the main chamber easily, but the grounds around the lake are a popular place for walking and taking photos.
What fascinates me is the way it uses light. Those big openings mean the inside gets natural light without direct sun, which is very smart in a hot climate. I also find it interesting that a foreign architect managed to create something that now feels so deeply connected to Bangladeshi identity. It shows that great architecture can become a symbol of a whole nation.
