From me to society

Part 3 lasts four to five minutes. If Part 2 was about a book you enjoyed, Part 3 may ask "Do people read less than in the past?" or "Should schools choose what children read?".

Talk about people in general, not just yourself. Use "many people", "in my country", "younger generations", "it depends on…".

Useful moves

Opinion: "I'd say…", "I'm fairly sure that…". Comparison: "compared with twenty years ago…", "whereas older people…". Speculation: "I expect that…", "it's likely that…", "there might be…". Balance: "On the one hand… but on the other…".

A strong answer gives a view, explains why, and adds an example or a contrast.

Developing a Part 3 answer

Q: Do people read less than in the past?

"I'd say people read just as much, but differently. Compared with my parents' generation, fewer people buy printed books, whereas almost everyone reads articles and messages on their phone all day. The real change, I think, is that reading has become shorter and more broken up, which might make it harder to concentrate on long texts."
