Common Writing mistakes

Under-length answers, memorised templates, no overview in Task 1, and copying the question: the habits that hold bands down.

বাংলায় সারাংশ (Bangla summary)

কম শব্দ, মুখস্থ template, Task 1-এ overview না থাকা, প্রশ্ন হুবহু কপি — যে অভ্যাসগুলো ব্যান্ড কমিয়ে রাখে।

By the end of this lesson you can

  • Avoid the penalties for under-length and copied text
  • Write an overview in every Academic Task 1
  • Replace memorised templates with real answers

Mistakes that cost the most

Writing fewer than 150 or 250 words affects your Task Achievement or Task Response score. Words copied directly from the question are not counted towards your total.

In Academic Task 1, an answer without an overview (a sentence summarising the main trends or features) usually cannot score above Band 5 for Task Achievement.

Templates and off-topic content

Memorised sentences such as "In this day and age, this is a controversial issue that has sparked heated debate" add words but no meaning. Examiners recognise them, and they can count against you.

Spend your words on ideas that answer this question. Paraphrase the prompt in your own words rather than copying it.
