I'd like to talk about a hand-woven Jamdani panjabi that I wear on special occasions. A panjabi is a long traditional shirt for men here, and Jamdani is a very fine cotton weave from the Narayanganj area, which is actually recognised by UNESCO as part of our cultural heritage.

My mother bought it for me two years ago when we visited a weavers' village near the Shitalakshya river. We watched the weavers working on wooden looms, and it takes them several weeks to make just one piece, because the patterns are woven directly into the fabric by hand rather than printed.

It's off-white with a delicate grey pattern of small flowers along the collar and sleeves. I don't wear it often; I save it for Eid, weddings and Pohela Boishakh. Last year I wore it to my cousin's wedding, and several people asked where I'd got it.

I enjoy wearing it for a few reasons. First, it's incredibly comfortable, light and breathable, so even on a hot day I don't feel sticky. Second, I feel proud wearing something made in my own country by skilled craftspeople instead of a mass-produced shirt from a factory. And finally, it has a story. Every time I wear it, I remember watching the old weaver's hands moving so fast. I think clothes with a story feel much more valuable than clothes that simply follow the latest fashion.
