Idiomatic but natural phrases, topic vocabulary and ways to give opinions that sound like real conversation.

15 minutesIntermediateLesson 5 of 5
বাংলায় সারাংশ (Bangla summary)

স্বাভাবিক idiomatic বাক্যাংশ, বিষয়ভিত্তিক শব্দভান্ডার এবং মতামত প্রকাশের বাস্তব উপায়।

By the end of this lesson you can

  • Use common, natural idiomatic phrases correctly
  • Prepare topic vocabulary for frequent Part 1 and 2 themes
  • Vary how you give opinions and preferences

Natural, not memorised

Band 7 speakers use some less common and idiomatic vocabulary, with awareness of style and collocation. That means everyday expressions used correctly, such as "I'm not a big fan of…", "it's not my cup of tea", "I can't stand…", "it's a great way to unwind", rather than old-fashioned idioms like "raining cats and dogs".

Vary your opinions

Instead of "I think" every time: "I'd say…", "personally…", "as far as I'm concerned…", "I'm pretty sure…", "I'm not convinced that…". For preferences: "I'd rather…", "I tend to prefer…", "I'm really into…".

Plain versus natural

Plain: I like music very much. Music is good for relaxing.

Natural: I'm really into music, especially old Bengali songs. It's my way of switching off after a long day.
