Listening for meaning, not every word

Stop trying to catch every word. Listen for key words, signposts and stressed information instead.

15 minutesFoundationLesson 10 of 10
বাংলায় সারাংশ (Bangla summary)

প্রতিটি শব্দ ধরার চেষ্টা না করে মূল শব্দ, signpost এবং জোর দেওয়া তথ্যের দিকে মন দিন।

By the end of this lesson you can

  • Identify the stressed content words that carry meaning
  • Use signpost phrases to follow a talk
  • Keep listening after missing a word

Content words carry the message

Speakers stress the words that matter (nouns, main verbs, numbers, adjectives) and say small grammar words quickly. In "I'll MEET you at the STATION at SEVEN", the stressed words alone give the message.

When you practise, focus on catching stressed words. You will understand more, and you will panic less when a small word is lost.

Signposts tell you what comes next

Phrases like "first of all", "another point is", "on the other hand", "the main reason" and "to sum up" show the structure of a talk. They tell you a new idea, a contrast or a conclusion is coming.

In IELTS, an answer often follows a signpost: "The most important thing to bring is…".

Hear the stress

Spoken: "The LIBRARY closes at FIVE on SATURDAYS, but on SUNDAYS it's CLOSED all day."

Key information: library — five — Saturdays — Sundays closed.

You can answer a question about opening hours from the stressed words alone.
